About Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham is a Bollywood film released in India and countries with large NRI populations on 14 December 2001.

It features Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor and Rani Mukerji in a guest appearance. It is director Karan Johar's second movie (after Kuch Kuch Hota Hai). This is the fifth movie to star Shahrukh Khan and Kajol - this movie along with their others was praised for their on-screen chemistry.

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... was the highest grossing Indian film in the overseas market until 2006, when its record was broken by Johar's third film, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. It climbed up to 3rd place in the British box office within two weeks of release, and maintained its place for over 3 weeks. It got to 32nd place at the American box office, opening there 4 January 2002. The film was the first Bollywood feature to see a theatrical release in Germany (with German subtitles, a dubbed version was produced too).

Yashvardhan "Yash" Raichand (Amitabh Bachchan) is a rich businessman, living with his loving wife Nandini (Jaya Bachchan) and two sons, Rahul and Rohan. Rahul is adopted whilst Rohan is their biological son. Rahul feels indebted to his parents when he finds out at the age of eight that he is adopted. Yash expects both of his sons to abide by the traditions of their family - this includes going to boarding school and having arranged marriages. As an adult, Rahul (Shahrukh Khan) returns home after studying abroad for many years. He promises his father that, no matter what happens, he shall abide by the family's traditions. However, Rahul soon comes across Anjali (Kajol) and instantly falls for her. After they spend some time together, Anjali too falls for him but feels that their relationship has no future, as she is from a working class background whereas he is from a rich family. Yash decides to get his friend's daughter Naina (Rani Mukherji), whom he sees as a very suitable girl, married to Rahul. However, Naina encourages Rahul to follow his heart when she comes to know that he loves another woman. Rahul informs his father that he is in love with Anjali and intends to marry her. But Yash is enraged and hurt by this news. Rahul promises to break off with Anjali. He goes to tell her that he cannot marry her, but is shocked to discover that her father (Alok Nath) has suddenly died. Rahul cannot bear to see Anjali living alone and decides to marry her, at once, without his father's permission. Yash is very upset and says that the reason for Rahul's action is that he is not of Raichand blood. He throws Rahul out of the house, saying he no longer considers him his son. Nandini and Rahul share a tearful goodbye. Nandini also sends Rahul's nanny Sayeeda (Farida Jalal) so that Rahul can always feel a mother's love. Before leaving, Rahul visits Rohan who is in boarding school and advises him on what to do when he wishes to achieve something in life. He requests that Rohan never asks why he left or where he went.
